An eighteenth-century tale to confound the history books, The Nemesis Man sets sail to the south seas with Captain Cook aboard HM Bark Endeavour. It tells the story of Joseph Fleck, a man of whom there is no other record. Skulduggery his watchword, he is a scoundrel who by turn is a smuggler, fugitive, stowaway, sea-dog, and deserter. His forte is to cause havoc. His malign influence has tragic consequences for many that have the misfortune to cross his path. Whether by sea or land, at home in what would be a Devon full of danger for him, or across two oceans fighting in the tribal war he instigates, he is The Nemesis Man.

I found this book hard to get into at first but I found as I continued the more I began to enjoy it.
This is set in 18th century South West England and is a story that shows how one decision can change the path of many lives.
We encounter two brother, Joseph Fleck who has never quite managed to stay on the right side of the law and James Fleck who is happily living in Plymouth with his wife Ann and has a successful brewing business.
When one fateful day in August 1768, on the run from the law and with no where else to go Joseph turns up on his brothers doorstep in Plymouth asking for help. Despite his wife's warnings about getting involved James can't turn away family and lets Joseph into his home. It was a decision that was to alter the path of all their lives.
With James' help Joseph is smuggled on board the HM Bark Endeavour and so begins a life of hard work and adventure for Joseph, with the ship setting sail for the far off land of Tahiti and it's enticing natives.
Meanwhile back in England an incident that happens to Ann whilst James was helping Joseph escape changes their relationship and things are never the same again.
Will Joseph survive his adventures at sea and return home? What will become of James and Ann, can they survive?
