Overview
November 28th 2024 UPF Canada, in collaboration with our European and Middle East counterpart UPF EUME, continued its DPRK from Within series.
The backdrop for this series is that we in the West, and throughout the world, hear news about the DPRK ( North Korea) based on limited events surrounding missile testing, North Korean expats' testimonies, and the like. However, very few of these news sources can be corroborated by people who have recently visited, and in some cases, continue to visit, the DPRK in person.
This series features almost exclusively people who have recently visited the DPRK. By offering another view of the DPRK, we seek to enlarge the understanding of the reality of North Korea, including its driving impulses, in the search for avenues for inclusion and regional peace going forward.
In this installment, we heard Dr Okkyung Pak, anthropologist from Montreal, Canada, share about her very recent (October 2024) visit to the Pyeongyang area, featuring her interaction with academics and extended family members living in the region.
Response and comments to her presentation were provided by Mr. Paul Tjia, business consultant based in the Netherlands, who has traveled extensively in the DPRK.
