Dear Participant
We invite you to take part in a research project funded by the Australian Research Council, with FECCA and MCCGC as the partner organisations. This project is conducted for research purpose only. We are extremely grateful for your participation!
Please read the following information to help you decide whether you wish to take part.
What is this research about?
This research project aims to understand
your experience of
providing care and support for your older family members
who are from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds
and who currently live at home. We are interested in understanding your experience and your views on
- what is important in aged care support for older CALD people,
- what roles family carers play in supporting older family members, and
- how family and community service providers can work together to best support older CALD people ageing at home.
We want to use this understanding to help identify ways to enable community and family collaboration in providing aged care and inform services and policies to better support older CALD people and their families.
What will I need to do?
If you agree to participate in this research as a family carer, a UQ researcher will conduct an individual interview with you at a venue of your choice or online if you prefer, and the interview can be conducted in your preferred language. With your consent, we will audio-record the interview to facilitate data analysis. During the interview, the UQ researcher will first draw a care network diagram with you. We will then ask you some questions about who in your care network is expected to provide what type of care support for your older family member and why to help us understand your care network. Finally, the UQ researcher will complete a short survey with you with questions related to your care network. We expect it to take about 1 hour to complete both the interview and survey. As a token of our appreciation for your participation in the study, we will provide you with a
$30 Coles gift card.

Please feel free to ask any questions you might have about your participation in the project. Your participation is voluntary. Your decision on whether you take part or not will NOT affect your relationship with any community service providers.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
We hope the findings from this study will advance our understanding of culturally appropriate aged care. This understanding can be translated into practice and help identify ways to enable collaboration between family and community services to better support older Australians from diverse cultural backgrounds to age well in Australia.
What are the possible risks of taking part?
There are no anticipated risks related to participating in this study beyond some possible inconvenience associated with the time required. However, if you experience distress or nervousness during the interview, please let the researcher know, and we will do our best to make you feel relaxed. You are free to withdraw at any time from this study without any negative impact on yourself or your relationship with any service providers.
What will happen to the data collected from me?
All data collected from you will remain confidential. We hope to audio-record the interview with your consent to facilitate data analysis, but your responses will not be linked to your name. We will assign each participant an identifying code (e.g., 001F; 002M). Each interview and survey will be organised by its identifying code. Only researchers involved in this study will have access to the original data. The original recordings of the interview will be stored on a password-protected database at The University of Queensland and only accessible to the research team. The outcomes of this research may be presented at conferences, in reports or academic papers, or incorporated into training programs. In any publication or presentation, your name will NOT be identified.
What will happen if I decide to withdraw?
Your participation in this study is voluntary. You are free to withdraw at any time from this study without any negative impact on yourself or your relationship with any service providers. Should you decide to withdraw, all data already collected from you will be destroyed and will not be used in the research.
