Prepare for a storm

  • Secure loose items in your yard
  • Clean your gutters, downpipes and  drains to prevent blockages
  • Trim trees and branches that could  fall on your home or property
  • Make repairs to your roof
  • Check your insurance policy is current  and adequate
  • Make an emergency plan for your family
  • that outlines what you would do in  an emergency
  • Put together an emergency kit including  a battery powered radio, torch and  spare batteries
  • Check local and social media for information, updates and advice

Helpful hints

  • Check your roof and gutters every couple  of weeks. Even if you’ve cleared your gutters recently, they can soon fill up with leaves and other debris, especially after a downpour.
  • Ask the council or energy company to  check trees on your street that may pose  a threat to your property or powerlines.
  • Get to know your neighbours. They might need a hand getting storm ready. When  bad weather strikes you will know who  lives nearby.
  • Make sure everyone in your household has talked about what to do in extreme weather.


During a storm

  • Activate your emergency plan,  locate your emergency kit Stay indoors and away from windows
  • If outdoors, find safe shelter away  from trees
  • Never drive, ride or walk  through floodwater Ensure pets are safe
  • Check local and social media for information, updates and advice


After a storm

  • Check your home and property  for damage
  • Keep clear of damaged buildings,  powerlines and trees
  • Be aware of hazards such as floodwater, debris and damaged roads or bridges Avoid driving through affected areas
  • Check on your neighbours when  it is safe to do so


Emergency kit


My emergency kit has:

  • Battery-powered radio with  spare batteries
  • Torch with spare batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Candles and waterproof matches
  • Important papers including  emergency contact numbers A copy of my home emergency plan
  • Waterproof bag for valuables

 

 When you decide to leave  add these items:


  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Prescriptions, medications, toiletries
  • Clothing and strong shoes
  • Non-perishable food and drinking water
  • Anything special you need for other  family members
  • Keep your emergency kit in a waterproof storage container
  • Regularly check and restock items in  your emergency kit (e.g. use-by dates  on batteries)
  • Keep a list of emergency contact numbers in or near your phone Check your gutters are clear
