Your interest and experience

Why are you interested in volunteering in the Life Stories Program?

I am interested in the aged “spiritual” care as well as “spiritual autography”.

The aged care aspect developed while I was caring for my mother who was a stroke patient.

I also helped my mother in her writing of autobiography. Her autobiography was already published 2010 in Korean, and she passed away nine years ago, but I am now working on an unwritten part of her biography.

I heard of the Life Stories Program about seven years ago and was hoping to do it as a volunteer work.

Calvary’s values are Hospitality, Healing, Stewardship and Respect. Which of these resonates most with you and why?

Without reading more of each value in detail, I am not able to say which resonates more with me. They all seem equally important. But I have a special interest in healing.

Do you have any experience in a health, hospital, palliative care or end of life environment?

As mentioned in the first part, caring for my mother was the most direct experience. But I have also done quite a bit of reading on related areas.

What skills and qualities would you bring to this role?

Engaging in conversation, deep listening, and writing.

Computer related skills.

What is your greatest strength and how would it help you in this role?

All of the above.

What has been your most rewarding experience helping someone else?

Mutual appreciation

What do you think you would find personally challenging in this role?

I am from an Asian migrant background. Some people may feel cultural distance from the Asian look ( even though I have lived in the English speaking world for nearly 50 years.)

What other regular commitments do you have?

We ask that each Story Recorder complete a minimum of 2 Life Stories per year and as an estimate, each could take up to 6-8 hours per week over a 10 week period.

I have other studying, reading, and volunteer engagement, but I will try to manage all.
